This project, known as Lovejoy Wharf, was one of the highest profile demolition jobs in Boston in 2013, as it was a major historic redevelopment project along the city’s waterfront. It consisted of the complete take-down of a 9-story, 200,000 SF building (131 Beverly Street) and selective structural demolition of a 10-story, 195,000 SF building (160 N. Washington Street), including the removal of the top 2 stories.
A separation was created between the existing building to remain, 160 N Washington, and Building 131. The selective demolition scope for 160 N Washington consisted of removing the top two floors. In order to catch any debris from the removal of the top 2 stories, 600 LF of safety catch platforms were installed on the 7th floor. 160 N. Washington also required the creation of slab openings on each floor to hold six new elevators, the installation of two new stairways, a new atrium and new fire exhaust control systems. In order to remove the structural corbels of the building, all of the length-wise elevations were required to be shored.
Both interior and exterior architectural components were preserved to maintain the original look and feel of the historic structure, which was built in 1909 for commercial purposes.
