The existing Cuilmerville Bridge was a single span Under Truss bridge that was over an active CN Railroad mainline. Both ends of the structure had limited access. This caused the structure to be cut and removed in three pieces.
A Temporary Support System was erected adjacent to the railroad prior to any demolition activities taking place.
The bridge deck, sidewalk, and paraphet where sawcut prior to removal. The deck, sidewalk, sidewalk support structure, paraphet, non-essential stringers and floor beams where removed prior to complete demolition.
A 500 ton crane was mobilized on the west abutment. Two-thirds of the structure was separated and removed via crane and placed on the west side for processing. The east side of the structure remained on the temporary support and was cut into two separate pieces, this was due to the east side of the structure being adjacent to an active road which limited the size because of limited room to work.
Both existing abutments remained and were integrated into the new bridge.
